How Long Does Window Tinting Take Hours to Install, Days to Dry

Tinting a car takes anywhere from about 45 minutes to a few hours of work, depending on how many windows get film, but the film then needs days to dry before the windows go down and weeks to cure fully clear.

The appointment itself

Madico, one of the film manufacturers, puts the installation at 45 minutes to a few hours depending on how many windows are being tinted, and suggests allowing half a day so the installer is not rushed and the film has some time to dry before the car is handed back. Two front doors sit at the short end of that range. A full sedan with the curved back glass, or a large SUV with extra quarter windows, sits at the long end. Arranging a ride for the morning is simpler than waiting in a lobby.

What makes a job run longer

Old film is the usual culprit. Faded, bubbled tint on a used car has to be steamed off and every trace of adhesive scraped from the glass before new film can go on, and the back window is slow because the defroster lines are easy to cut. A front-door correction on a car that was tinted too dark for Florida also adds time, since the film has to come off, the glass gets metered after the new film is on, and the statute's compliance label goes inside the driver's door jamb. Under Florida law that front glass must pass at least 28 percent of visible light, with a tolerance of 3 percent either way on the reading.

Days, not minutes, before the windows go down

Film goes onto glass on a slip solution of water, and the water left behind is what has to dry. XPEL's care guidance for its window film says to wait roughly one to five days before rolling down or cleaning the windows, adjusted for climate, and to expect haze or small moisture bubbles for up to ten days. Rolling a door glass down too early can catch the top edge of soft film on the seal and lift it.

Full cure is measured in weeks

The International Window Film Association's automotive guideline says haze and water distortion during drying are not defects, that an installation may be inspected within a day, and that cure time depends on film thickness, the film's coatings, climate and where the car is kept. Films with special high-performance coatings can take longer, so the manufacturer's stated cure time for that specific product is the one to go by.

Homes and offices are a different clock

For flat glass, the IWFA's architectural guideline lists typical visual cure times by thickness: about 30 days for film up to 4 mils, 60 days for 4 to 8 mils, 90 days for 8 to 12, and 140 days for the heaviest safety films. A thin solar-control film on a Palma Sola slider clears much sooner than a thick safety film on a north-facing window that sees little sun.

Bradenton's heat helps

Drying is faster when the glass is warm. The National Weather Service's normals for Bradenton put the daily high at 90 degrees or more every day from the end of May to mid-September, so a car parked in the sun through the summer tends to dry at the quicker end of any range, while a car kept in a shaded garage in January takes longer.

Where to go from here

A full vehicle is car window tinting, and heat-focused film is ceramic window tint. Houses and storefronts are residential window tinting and commercial window tinting. The pricing page shows what installers around Bradenton post for each.
